NELSON CASCAIS: contrabajo

He studied at the School of Jazz of the Hot Clube de Portugal and at the National Conservatory of Lisboa.
In 1994, as a finalist of the HPC jazz course, he represented  Portugal at the International Association of Schools of Jazz annual meeting held in New York City.
In 1995 he begins to teach at the Jazz School of the HCP.
From 1995 he developes an active career as a sideman, performing with such recognized artists as Bernardo Sassetti, Maria João &
Mário Laginha, Carlos Martins, Laurent Filipe and Pedro Madaleno, with
the most talented musicians of his generation such as Nuno Ferreira,
Jorge Reis, André Fernandes and Afonso Pais and also with some foreign talented performers such as Rick Margitza, Perico Sambeat, Julian Arguelles, Dave O´Higgins, John Ellis, Aaron Goldberg,
Jorge Pardo, Jerome Richardson, Maria Schneider, Ivan Paduart and Jarmo Savolainen.
Along with Isaac Turienzo and Paulo Bandeira formed the Trio Ibérico, band that performed regularly troughout Spain.
He played at the main Portuguese Jazz Festivals such as Jazz em
Agosto/Gulbenkian , Serralves, Loulé and Matosinhos.
In 1999 he forms the Nelson Cascais 5tet.
He was part of the Orquestra do Festival GuimarãesJazz 2001 under the direction of Maria Schneider.
In May 2001 he records his first album as a leader "Ciclope" (Tone of a Pitch, 2002).
In 2002 he is declared Portuguese Jazz Musician of the Year by the site JazzPortugal
In 2003 he tours Spain with his quintet.
In 2005 he records his second cd "Nine Stories".
