abe rábade

BOTÁNICA is Abe Rábade's new album on Karonte Records. 14 original compositions dedicated to the native vegetation of Galicia make up a field of vision open to the world that merges the rural with the urban.

The musical writing and piano of Abe Rábade meet the voice and traditional Galician percussion of one of today's most prestigious figures: Davide Salvado.

Daniel Juárez on tenor sax, Virxilio da Silva on guitar, Ton Risco on vibraphone, Jimena Andión on cello, Pablo Martín Caminero on double bass and Naíma Acuña on drums complete a heterogeneous artistic group, based on the integration of various musical aesthetics and on nonjudgmental exploration.

The album is number 15 in Abe Rábade's discography.

They dance slowly with space devouring the very ligth.
They live unscripted with the sings of their surrouding.
Ductility and Silence.

Abe Rábade, 2022

Carátula Botánica

"The pianist from Compostela, in his two decades of restless search, has never come so far, in splendor and sophistication, as with Botánica. Because here the syntax is not only jazzy, but also traditional, folkloric and close to chamber music"

Fernando Neira, Un disco al día

Videoclips of BOTÁNICA

"Abe Rábade is still in a state of grace and with brilliant ideas of his own!"

Txema Mañeru, Orpheo

The lyrics of BOTÁNICA

NAKED HEALER

(lyrics: Abe Rábade & popular)

My mother and yours

they know the good herbs

let them reap the plants

those that take away all the sorrows.

My mother wants some clogs

white, made out of birch

bring them please from Vilalba

she wants those that have stockings.

ASH TREE

(lyrics: popular & Daniel Pardo)

Up there on that hill

there is a well of clear water

where the Virgin of Franqueira

washes her feet and her face.

Look how the Ash tree shines

its leaves are golden

it shows off its silver body

black knots in its branches.

ai la la la la la la la

ai la la la la la la la

I climbed the tree of life

I became who I wanted to be

I crawled, I reached the top

I spotted my lover.

ai la la la la la la la

ai la la la la la la la

I will sing for your life

because you dance so beautifully

you look at me like, my love

among the ash trees.

ai la la la la la la la

ai la la la la la la la

The twigs of this forest

and the foliage of this bed

are the wings to lift you up

they are feet to dance with grace.

ai la la la la la la la

ai la la la la la la la

TALL GRASS

(lyrics: popular)

And the grass of the field dries

and it turns green again

that's what old loves do

when they see each other again.

ai la la la la la la la

ai la la la la la la la

The grass to fall in love

the loving herb

the grass to fall in love

I bring it in my pocket (faltriqueira*)

I bring it in my pocket.

ai la la la la la la la

ai le la le la

le la le la

le la le le la

le la le la

le la le la

le la le le la

le la le la le

THE CHESTNUT LEAF

(lyrics: Abe Rábade & popular)

Oh the chestnut leaf

oh when it's green it doesn't roar

oh they call it wasted time

oh to walk behind those who run away.

Oh the chesnut tree of Liúlfe

has its leafs turned

the wind has turned them

oh on a frosty morning.

If the stitch goes without thread

don't be so afraid of it

oh time has a needle

oh that sews or pinches in the fingers.

The stones that the river moves

are not blown away by the wind

memory has a key

oh that opens the doors of time.

NARCISSUS

(lyrics: Ovidio -from Metamorposes-, translate by José Antonio Dobarro)

I'm you, I know, don't be fooled by my image,

I burn with love for me in flames that I myself light and suffer..

Who am i Seductive? Seduced? What kind of seduction is mine?

My desire is in me, richness makes me miserable.

Oh, if only I could, hopefully, get rid of my body!

Strange lover's craving, from which I love to distance myself.

This grief makes me weak, I already don't have in life

a long stay, because I agonize in its first age.

Dying does not weigh me down,

if I'm going to let this pain die.

BEECH TREE

(lyrics: poem by Richard Aldington, translate by Abe Rábade)

The beech-leaves are silver
For lack of the tree’s blood.
At your kiss my lips
Become like the autumn beech-leaves.

CHESTNUT

(lyrics: popular)

The chestnut in the husk

I know what she does

If she is small she grows

if it is ripe it falls.

YEW

(lyrics: Abe Rábade)

It was in Monte Medulio

some years before Christ

when the Galicians wanted

instead of being slaves

to give up there own life

with the cruel poison of the Yew.

The Yew keeps the secrets

that a dead man did not say in life

they rise first from the earth

they arrive later at the branches

and end up free in the wind

when they come out through the leaves.

LOVE FROM THE ROOT

(lyrics: popular)

A willow may grow from cuttings

an alder only from the root

loves that were someone else's

you are worthless to me.

Hundred-year orange tree

throw your silver roots

taking loves is costless

forgetting them does kill.

AMORES DE PONLA

(lyrics: Abe Rábade & popular)

Prende! Salgueiriño,  prende!

Prende! Salgueiriño, prende!

Prende na fonte serea

Tamén os meus ollos prenden

Tamén os meus ollos prenden

Nas miradas dunha nena

Prende! Salgueiriño,  prende!

Prende! Salgueiriño, prende!

Prende na fonte sen medo

Tamén os meus ollos prenden

Tamén os meus ollos prenden

Nas miradas daquel neno

CORTIZA

DANCE OF THE OAK

(lyrics: popular)

I

Antoniño, if you go

leave me a reminder

in every green oak

a sprig of hope.

II

I have never seen a crooked oak

grow his branches straight

I have never seen a married man

grow a well-groomed beard.
